Q:
Are the colors used in Mulch Environmentally Friendly?

A:

IRON OXIDE BASED PIGMENTS:
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PIGMENTS

For its colored mulches, Atlantic Horticultural Products uses iron oxide based pigment for a long lasting, vibrant color.

Environmentally friendly pigments.
Iron oxides occur widely in nature and have been used as pigments for centuries. The oldest examples of their use are the cave paintings found in Southern France and Spain.

No harm to the environment.
According to our pigment supplier, these pigments are as ecologically harmless as food colorants. As they are not covered by regulations on hazardous substances or occupational hygiene, their use is unrestricted. Still according to our pigment supplier, these colorants will harm neither man nor his environment.

Long lasting visual accents.
Our pigment supplier assures us that these colorants are specially formulated to withstand adverse weather conditions, which over time can often affect the appearance and performance of ordinary mulch. These colorants are UV protected and will resist premature fading by rain or snow. In addition, the colorants remain stable during freeze-thaw cycles.

Note:
In the processing of colored mulch, the pigment is embedded in the wood fiber. Some loose particles are left on the surface of the bark and those might wash off with the first rain or when first watered. These particles can sometimes run off your mulch and onto an adjacent smooth surface (such as cement, wood or rocks). Not to worry, these particles are only on the surface therefore not permanent.
To take them off, only wash off the area with a brush or pressured water (pressure gun). Use of a mild soap could help. It will also wash away with time.
